Jaw Surgery Blog - Not for the faint-hearted.

Pretty soon I will have a lot of spare (recovery) time on my hands and maybe this blog will help people to understand or to get some advice if they are going through/will be going through the same thing.

So I'm having jaw surgery next Wednesday, and it will improve my bite because at the moment my lower teeth are in front of my top teeth when I bite down (correct term is 'Under-bite'), which is funny when you tell people because they always try and do it and look hilarious, and they get jaw ache. But this is my reality. And for 5 years now my op has always seemed like something that would happen in the distant future, but now it's here! Feels surreal.

1 week before surgery.
I received my letter yesterday informing me I must not wear make up or nail varnish. Great. Not only will I be bruised and swollen but I'm not allowed to disguise it in any way. I had planned to do some nail art bored in my hospital bed to pass time but guess that's out of the window too now.
This probably sounds like I don't even want the op, but I'm probably 60% excited and 40% nervous.
Made the mistake of watching The Real A&E earlier. Stupidest thing to do a week before surgery, advice - don't do that. And also DO NOT watch American advice videos on jaw surgery, they go like totally omg over the top.
This week has been about preparation. My nurse told me to use lip balm frequently before surgery because that's one of the things that patients mostly complain about after surgery (Hope she's right) so I've been using Carmex everyday. Also I have been stocking up on soups, potatoes for mash, buying nice underwear and  pj's (to make myself feel better post op), packing a bag and sorting out what days your long line of visitors will come and visit you.
I have also eaten all of my favourite foods, I've had steak twice, crisps, bread, cheese and crackers because after next wednesday I am on a liquid diet for 6 weeks. The nurse also told my I will lose about 1 stone in weight, which is useful because I never stick to diets and this way I have no choice but to stick to it.

Will try and keep this up and will be brutally honest about what it's like :) and might even upload before and after photos, maybe.
